Today we?re going to learn how math makes it easy to estimate things that seem practically impossible to calculate. In particular, since summer is in full swing, we?re going to take math to the beach and think about the age-old question: How many grains of sand are on all of Earth?s beaches? As long time Math Dude fans may recall, we first learned about using math to make estimates when we watched Secret Agent Math daringly calculate how many breaths of air there are in a sealed room. So why are we revisiting this topic? Because learning to combine your brain with math to make estimates is an absolutely invaluable skill?and it?s a skill that?s only developed with practice. Which is exactly what we?re going to do today.
Step 1: Make a Plan Sometimes it?s fun to jump right in and do something without really knowing what you?re doing. And while that kind of spontaneity is great for things like claymation and spur-of-the-moment weekend trips, it?s a really bad idea for tackling math problems. As such, the first thing we need to do today is make a plan for figuring out how many grains of sand there are on Earth?s beaches. I know this might sound like a nearly impossible task, but rest assured that overcoming these seemingly long odds?and the sense of dread they instill in the hearts of otherwise brave souls?is precisely what our plan will do.
The best way to tackle a tough problem like this is to break it down into easier parts. In our case, if we can estimate how many grains of sand there are in a typical volume of beach (say the number of grains per cubic meter), and then estimate what the volume of sand is on all the beaches of the world (say in cubic meters), then all we have to do to find the total number of grains of sand is multiply these two numbers together. Easy, right? Well, okay?perhaps this still isn?t exactly easy. But let?s continue marching bravely forward to see if we can tackle each of these sub-problems on their own, and then to see if this divide-and-conquer approach can help make the seemingly impossible possible.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were little changed in light trading on Tuesday as mixed data gave investors little indication whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke might signal more economic stimulus from the Fed when he speaks on Friday.
Bernanke is scheduled to address a conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and market participants are waiting to see whether he will announce new measures to boost growth. The Fed chairman is expected to feed expectations for a third round of quantitative easing, though he could keep markets guessing about the timing.
Expectations for more stimulus have risen along with signs of slowing global growth. Japan cut its assessment of its economic expansion, citing a deceleration in U.S. and Chinese demand for its exports.
U.S. consumer confidence unexpectedly weakened in August to its lowest in nine months as Americans turned more pessimistic about the short-term outlook, according to the Conference Board.
But in another report, the S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas showed U.S. home prices rose for a fifth consecutive month.
"A mixed bag of economic indicators that sort of point downward; we are all hopeful this leaves some room for the Fed to shower money on us," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer, Harris Private Bank in Chicago.
"Unfortunately a fair amount of stimulus is probably priced in, so we are at a period now where bad news is good news until we hear what (Bernanke) is actually going to do."
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> added 5.23 points, or 0.04 percent, to 13,129.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 1.51 points, or 0.11 percent, to 1,411.95. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 7.63 points, or 0.25 percent, to 3,080.82.
A day after the lightest volume of the year, trading was again thin. Some 2.3 billion shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq halfway through Tuesday's session. The average daily volume has been 6.56 billion shares traded.
"It's typical late August. Everybody fled, no one gives a darn, volume is low, anything that happens is maybe a little more exaggerated than it should be," said Cummins Catherwood, managing director at Boenning and Scattergood in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
"Maybe there will be an inflection point on Friday, but chances are there may not be anybody there to pay attention to it."
The S&P 500 has been pinned in a fairly tight range over the last three weeks, finding a support level at 1,400 while also unable to convincingly pierce the April high of 1,422.38, which has acted as a resistance point. The index has been unable to muster a move of at least 1 percent in either direction since August 3.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A gunman who killed a former co-worker in cold blood in the shadow of the Empire State Building and then was shot dead by police after he turned his gun on them spent long hours in the quiet of Central Park, photographing hawks and marveling over nature's beauty.
His victim was a gregarious salesman, beloved by his nieces and nephews as the fun uncle who could talk with equal expertise about the New York Jets and the women's fashion accessories he sold.
Investigators on Saturday were trying to piece together what caused Jeffrey Johnson, a T-shirt designer, to ambush Steve Ercolino, an apparel company vice president, a day earlier outside the Manhattan offices of the company where they once were colleagues.
Police said Johnson hid behind a car and then killed Ercolino with five gunshots as he arrived for work. Johnson then was shot by two police officers who confronted him on a busy sidewalk.
Security camera footage showed the officers had only an instant to react when Johnson suddenly turned as they approached and pointed his gun at them, his arm cocked as if to fire.
Their encounter was over in eight seconds. The officers, who had been standing nearly close enough to shake hands with Johnson and had no opportunity to take cover, fired almost immediately.
Nine bystanders were wounded in the 16-shot volley, likely by stray or ricocheting police bullets. None of their injuries was life-threatening, police said.
Police investigating Johnson's killing of Ercolino were eyeing bad blood between them from when they worked together at Hazan Import, a garment district business where Ercolino was a vice president of sales.
Johnson and Ercolino had traded harassment accusations when they worked together, police said, and when Johnson was laid off from the company a year ago he blamed Ercolino, saying he hadn't aggressively marketed his new T-shirt line.
After Johnson's layoff, neighbors said, he continued to leave his apartment every day in a suit.
Internet records listed Johnson as the administrator of the website for a business called St. Jolly's Art, which sold iron-on graphic art for T-shirts. Art for sale on the site included stylized drawings of fighter planes and muscle cars and whimsical "seafaring vignettes" featuring pirate maidens and tall ships.
Johnson also was part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home.
In one email to another bird watcher who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.
"Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little 'flotilla' of Mallards swimming and softly honking ... fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable," he wrote.
His photographs of Central Park's hawk population appeared regularly on blogs tracking the birds.
A neighbor who often saw Johnson, 58, said he was always alone.
"I always felt bad," said Gisela Casella, who lived a few floors above Johnson in a modest apartment building on the Upper East Side. "I said, 'Doesn't he have a girlfriend?' I never saw him with anybody."
Ercolino, 41, was described by his relatives as the opposite of a quiet loner.
His eldest brother, Paul Ercolino, said he was a gregarious salesman who often traveled, had a loving girlfriend and was the life of any family gathering.
"He was in the prime of his life," he said. "He would do anything for anybody at any time. ... He was so wonderful with my children. At Christmastime, he was the one who always had the best presents for the kids."

But when two police officers approach in a hurry, Johnson turns and pulls a handgun from a bag. Then, the scene explodes into action. People seated on a bench behind the gunman and pedestrians standing close to the two officers run for their lives.

Startled New Yorkers later looked up from their morning routines in the crowded business district to see people sprawled in the streets bleeding and a tarp covering a body in front of the tourist landmark.
"I was on the bus, and people were yelling 'Get down! Get down!" accountant Marc Engel said. "I was thinking, 'You people are crazy. No one is shooting in the middle of midtown Manhattan at 9 o'clock in the morning.'"
It was over in seconds, he said ? "a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other."
Afterward, he saw sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one man "dripping enough blood to leave a stream."
The officers who fired were part a detail regularly assigned to patrol landmarks such as the 1,454-foot-tall skyscraper since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, officials said.
Kelly, the police commissioner, said the officers who confronted Johnson had "a gun right in their face" and "responded quickly, and they responded appropriately."
"These officers, having looked at the tape myself, had absolutely no choice," he said.
A witness had told police that Johnson fired at the officers, but authorities say ballistics evidence doesn't support that. Johnson's gun held seven rounds, they said. He fired five times at Ercolino, one round was still in the gun and one was ejected when officers secured it, authorities said.
A loaded magazine was found in Johnson's briefcase.
Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla., in 1991, but he didn't have a permit to possess it in New York City, authorities said.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York still is the safest big city in the country, on pace to have a record low number of murders this year.
"But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said of the shooting, following mass shootings at a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
The nine people wounded outside the Empire State Building were all from New York City, except for a woman from Chapel Hill, N.C. They suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.
Metal detectors and bag searchers have been standard at the Empire State Building since 1997, when a gunman opened fire on the 86th-floor observation deck, killing one tourist and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself.
The skyscraper remained open Friday throughout the mayhem, although its workers became witnesses.
"We were just working here and we just heard bang, bang, bang!" said Mohammed Bachchu, a worker at a nearby souvenir shop.
He said he rushed from the building and saw seven people lying on the ground, covered in blood.
Rebecca Fox said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting, but then she saw a woman shot in the foot and a man dead on the ground.
"I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said. "It was like 'CSI,' but it was real."

Supporters of an innovative clean energy financing scheme welcomed a favorable court ruling earlier this month. On August 9, a federal district court judge in California ruled (PDF) that the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) violated federal law when it decided, without public notice or opportunity for stakeholders to comment, in July 2010, not to underwrite mortgages on homes with property assessed clean energy (PACE) loans.
As I wrote in January, FHFA was concerned that in most states with PACE programs the liens resulting from the PACE loans have priority over mortgages ? the PACE lender would be paid ahead of the bank, or Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, in the case of foreclosure.
PACE watcher Ethan Elkind, who holds a joint appointment at the UCLA and UC Berkeley law schools, called the ruling a ?decisive win? for the plaintiffs, which includes the California Attorney General?s Office. ?With this decision,? Elkind wrote at the Legal Planet blog, ?the FHFA PACE policy is officially toast until the agency can develop a final rule pending the outcome of an ongoing rulemaking process.?
The public can submit comments (PDF) to inform that rulemaking process until September 13.
?This decision does not clear up the long-term uncertainty around PACE, but it limits the FHFA?s ability to issue a sweeping policy undercutting the program,? said Elkind. ?The final rule (whatever form it takes) will be subject to APA [Administrative Procedure Act] requirements and likely judicial scrutiny.?
The district court ruling does not settle the matter. The FHFA can appeal, and a higher court might need to resolve contrary PACE decisions in New York courts, according to Elkind.
Under the circumstances, he says, ?Local governments may be hesitant to restart their PACE programs until these questions are answered, and they?ve already missed a crucial window to use now-spent stimulus funds to launch them.?
PACE financing enables property owners to take out a loan, usually via city- or state-organized bonds, to pay for energy efficiency upgrades or onsite renewable energy. Loans are repaid, typically over 20 years, through an annual supplemental property tax assessment.
Cooperative solution with the FHFA?
In a recent interview, I spoke with Ygrene Energy Fund President Dan Schaefer about the August 9 court ruling and what comes next for residential PACE programs. Regular readers of this blog will remember the name. I interviewed Schaefer and Ygrene Chairman Dennis Hunter for an April post on the pending launch of Ygrene?s South Florida Green Corridor District PACE program. Ygrene assists local governments in establishing PACE districts for commercial and residential properties.

Another gem at Nikon's unveiling today is this little Coolpix S01, and by "little" we really mean little. At just 96 grams, this is the smallest and lightest Coolpix device ever but it's still surprisingly usable. But like our hands-on with the Android-powered S800c, we couldn't walk away with any sample photos to judge the S01's image quality. Just a quick recap: here you get a 10-megapixel CCD sensor, 3x optical zoom (29mm to 87mm), 720p video capture, several filter effects and a simple touch interface on a 2.5-inch LCD. We also saw five color options in Hong Kong: pink, black, white, red and silver (fingerprint magnet alert!). Our only complaints are that said camera uses a resistive touchscreen, and the lack of white balance options is also quite bizarre -- $179 isn't exactly a cheap enough price to justify this flaw. Murder most horrid The following case was reserved and stated for consideration and decision of the Court of Criminal Appeal, by Willes J. was proved The prisoners were convicted before me at the deceased Winter Gaol Delivery for the county of Derby of the manslaughter of another William Reaney inflicted on the 11th of October last. Part of the evidence consisted of a dying declaration in the following terms: "October 23rd, 1856; William Reaney states. I am a filesmith, and live in Abbey Lane. On Saturday night, the 11th of October, I was returning home from my work at Messrs. Cammell & Johnsons, at Sheffield. About seven o'clock I called at Beighton's public-house in Little I saw William Reaney the prisoner there, and asked him if he was going home soon. He said I need be in no hurry. I told him I must go soon as I had the club money to pay before nine o'clock. When I got up to come away William Reaney followed me to the door ; at that time James Reddish came up the street from the direction of the town, and William Reaney asked him if he had got any money. Reddish asked him what for, and Reaney said he wanted some bread and cheese, and I showed them a shop where they could get some. I then said to Reaney ' If thou is going to have some bread and cheese I must be off or I shall be too late.' I then came on my way home and called at William Boot's public-house at Heely on business and drank part of a pint of ale. I staid a few minutes and proceeded on my way. On arriving a little way from Derbyshire Lane, William Reaney and James Reddish overtook me. I accosted them first, saying ' You are come up.' On arriving at Derbyshire Lane a pot cart passed us, and Reddish got up behind and left me and William Reaney a short distance, and we came on together for about 200 yards, when William Reaney flew at me, struck me on the side of the head, and knocked me down. Whilst I was down he shouted out for ' Dick.' At the same time he gave me several punches upon the ribs. He then bent down over me, and I felt his hand about my face, and I bit his thumb. When down I asked him what he was going to do, and he said ' Blast thee, I will show thee what I am going to do.' At that time Reddish came back and Reaney told him I had bit him. Reddish replied, 'Blast him. Punch his bloody guts out.' I then cried out murder several times. I received several more kicks, but do not know which of them gave them to me ; they then both ran away. I got up and came forwards towards home. On arriving at the steps near the white houses I heard footsteps behind me. I was turning: round to see who it was, when I received a blow over the head and was knocked down. Whilst down I was punched several times. I am certain I was kicked by two men. I again cried out murder, and they gave over, and I raised myself up and saw Reaney cross the road and jump over into Gillott's field. I then got up and came on to the club house at Mrs. Siddon's, After stopping there I came home, and have not been out of bed siuce. I had not drank in the whole more than three pints of ale, and felt quite sober, and gave the prisoners no other provocation than what I have stated above. What I want to know is where Mrs Siddons lived. I have established her name was Jane Siddons and that she was the proprietor of the Mason Arms in 1857 in Woodseats Norton Derbyshire. I believe he died the next day. William Reaney was found guilty of manslaughter but I think he got off lightly. He tried to say that the confession of the victim could not be taken as a deathbed statement and therefore could not be taken as true. From the newspaper article I have just been sent it was definitely the Mason Arms (there is a quarry just across the road). Re: Murder most horrid I think this must be part of Richard Gillots farm. I have him as farmer round there in the 1846 Tithe map. Judging by the witnesses it has to be near Smithy Wood which starts in line with Derbyshire Lane and is on the other side of the Chesterfield Road stretching along almost to the Mason's Arms (now known as Big Tree.) They appear for the most part to be walking along the Chesterfield Road and the victim mentions Derbyshire Lane as where he was first attacked.
