Wall Street opens lower on last day of quarter

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new drug for advanced colon cancer developed by Bayer AG, a month ahead of the agency's expected action date for a decision. The drug, to be sold under the brand name Stivarga, was approved to treat colon cancer that has progressed after prior treatment or that has spread to other parts of the body, the agency said. "Someone has clearly lit a fire under the FDA," Sanford Bernstein analyst Geoffrey Porges said of the speedy approval. ...

MOSCOW (AP) -Three stadiums in Moscow will host some 2018 World Cup games, among the dozen arenas finalized by FIFA on Saturday for the first cup in Russia.

The centerpiece will be Moscow's 89,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the Champions League final in 2008. Work on redeveloping it is due for completion in 2016.

Among the 11 cities to host matches are St. Petersburg, and the Black Sea city of Sochi to the south.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at the venue announcement that Russia's preparations were ahead of schedule.

Chinese purchase of wind farms in Oregon blocked by President Obama

For the first time in 22 years, a U.S. president has stopped a foreign business from locating in the United States. National security risks is the reason given for blocking four wind farm projects slated for northern Oregon near a Navy installation used to base unmanned drones and electronic warfare planes on training missions, according to the Huffington Post.

Tensions between the U.S. and China have been increasing and this is bound to be another aggravation. Obama ordered Ralls Corporation which is owned by Chinese nationals to relinquish its interest in the wind farms that it had purchased earlier this year.

The president has the final authority to prohibit foreign activities, and they did not reveal the risks after receiving a report on the potential threats the wind farm presented according to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Locally in Oregon a Morrow County planner, Carla McLane, said the projects were approved by the county and construction was under way until CFIUS issued an order in July that halted construction. She said she does not know what the security concerns were.

The Chinese nationals group is The Sany Group, which is owned by the second richest man in the world Liang Wengen who has recently been appointed to the Central Committee of China?s Communist Party. Wengen?s wealth is estimated at $8.1 billion.

The president did not order the Chinese group to divest the assets, but to remove ?all items, structures, or other physical objects or installations of any kind (including concrete foundations) that the Companies or persons on behalf of the Companies have stockpiled, stored, deposited, installed or affixed thereon.?

It has been suggested that the wind turbines could serve as ?listening posts? for use in surveillance activities by the Chinese in the U.S. making the Navel base vulnerable to espionage.

Interview With Tony Horton P90X Inventor - Business Insider

Vice presidential candidate?Paul Ryan credits P90X, an intense 90-day home workout routine, for his ripped abs and lean build. So do Hollywood heavyweights like?Ben Stiller, Ashton Kutcher?and?Demi Moore. ?

The flood of unsolicited celebrity endorsements is one reason why Beachbody, the Santa-Monica based company that produces the workout DVDs, doesn't have to pay for Hollywood's stamp of approval.

Instead, the company relies on word-of-mouth and infomercials. So far that tactic seems to be working.?Paul Ryan's free praise of the extreme workout plan is just the latest proof.??

Since the program was introduced in 2005, Beachbody has sold around 4 million copies of P90X DVDS, according to The New York Times. In 2010,?P90X made up half of Beachbody's sales, CNBC's Darren Rovell reported.?

The?basic P90X package?sells for $119.85 and comes with 12 workout DVDs, a nutrition plan with recipes and meal schedules and a fitness guide that shows you how to do each exercise.?

But the boot-camp style workout regime, which uses a theory called "muscle confusion" to whip even the fluffiest bodies into sculpted specimens, isn't only for high-powered politicians and movie stars. ??

"Our audience is everybody," 54-year-old P90X creator Tony Horton says. "From folks in their 70s to their teens, male and female, professional, collegiate, high school athletes and government officials."?

We spoke with the fitness guru about the development of P90X and the impact of Paul Ryan's much-talked-about obsession with the workout regime. ??

Business Insider: What is P90X??

Tony Horton: P90X is based on a theory called "muscle confusion." This is a modern version of periodization training. I did not reinvent the wheel, but what I did was was combine weight training with yoga, pilates, karate and core exercises. The focus and desire was to make sure that people would have a 90-day plan and have routines that focused on their strengths and their weaknesses. ?Because of the variety ? there are 12 different workouts ? your body inevitably must change because of the fact that you're working on your weaknesses.?Some people describe it as a "90-day bootcamp." I think it's more than that. It's a 90-day re-education of what's required to get in the best shape of your life regardless of where you are: an ex-athlete, a mother of five, whether you're 25 or 45. ?

BI: Is there enough space to do this in my small apartment and what other equipment do I need?

TH: The program is designed to be done in your home. You need resistance bands, some dumbbells, a pull-up bar [which is optional] and a mat. That's it. The space you need is not much bigger than the size of a dining room table.?Most of the routines, more than 50 percent, are body-weight exercises, so you don't even need equipment for a lot of it.?

BI: Does this mean I should end my gym membership once I order the program??

TH: There's no one-size-fits-all answer.?A lot of people will put their gym membership on hold and when the 90 days are up, some of them will go back to the gym and do their traditional machine work and integrate those with P90X routines. Other folks will just quit the gym all together because they love being able to get better results in their house. It really depends. Some people really love the atmosphere of the gym. I like the gym and try to go once in a while when I'm traveling to different cities.

BI: Can you continue past the 90 days??

TH: There are three versions of P90X: Classic, Lean, and Doubles [the workouts use the same 12 DVDs, but in a different order and schedule]. A lot of people go back-and-forth. I know people who have done more than 20 rounds of P90X.?I also created P90X2 for people who have done several rounds and want to go to the next level.?P90X is indoor training for the outside world. I'm trying to focus on feeling good, performing well and functioning better as opposed to using P90X solely as a means to change your physique aesthetically. ??

BI: What's the history behind the P90X workout program??

TH: Back in the mid-80s and 90s I was a personal trainer, like a lot of people in Los Angeles. I was working over at 20th Century Fox and training my boss. My boss introduced me to Tom Petty and from there I started training a lot of celebrities and rock 'n' roll folks like Annie Lennox, Bruce Springsteen, Sean Connery and Ewan McGregor.?When you're working with folks like that, they have a lot of people around them who have high expectations. I figured out a way early on to try and get and these folks motivated without getting frustrated. The goal was to get results so that I could keep working and keep getting hired by other celebrities.?You want to avoid three things: boredom, injuries and the plateau effect. People saw results they had never seen before when using P90X. In the early stages I was getting up around 4:45 a.m., meeting my first client, then driving all over the city and finishing at 10 p.m. I was probably making $25 to $40 an hour. It seemed like a lot at the time.?

BI: Who is your audience??

TH:?Before P90X, there was a product called Power 90.?When we created P90X, our customers were our Power 90 customers and the folks that had been going to the gym and not getting results.?Everybody in our industry thought were were wasting our time because it [P90X] was too difficult for the average American, whom we were asking to think and act like an athlete.?I thought, if we make it fun and entertaining then our audience would probably be my demographic ? somewhere between 25 and 55. It ended up being much greater than that.?

Suddenly a lot of celebrities and people in government were talking about it. The audience opened up because they were seeing the people that they knew and respected in the public eye, who were of all shapes and sizes, doing it.?We don't pay anybody a penny to endorse P90X, but there was a lot of legitimacy to it.?Before you knew it, I'd go on the Home Shopping Network and sell out to grandmothers. I've been to the Philadelphia Eagles facility where the conditioning coach uses P90X with his players. I've been to Walter Reed Army hospital where men are using the routines.?

BI: Have you seen an increased interest in P90X since Paul Ryan's?endorsement??

TH: It certainly helps, as much as Michelle Obama [the First Lady is also a P90X convert]. It's a bi-partisan act to move and to eat better. It's not really for Democrats or Republicans, the elderly or high school kids. It's for anybody and everybody that wants to change.?Paul Ryan was a trainer when he came out of college, so he understood the concept of muscle confusion and why P90X works.?I don't know if it equates to sales, but it certainly does lead to a lot of interviews. Our Web traffic has doubled.?

BI: Is it possible for Paul Ryan to have 6 to 8 percent body fat? (Slate's Bill Gifford recently questioned this claim.)?

TH: I would claim that's probably true. He is very, very, very lean. I know what 6 to 8 percent body fat looks like, and there's no fat anywhere on the man. I'm around 9 percent and he's much leaner than I am.?I could show you thousands and thousands of regular folks who did P90X and have dropped down to that range. If you're working out 6 days a week and all you eat is fruit, vegetables and proteins you'll get down there. Most athletes don't eat as well as Paul Ryan or Michelle Obama.?

BI: Is that body-fat percentage healthy? ?

TH: Is it healthy for everybody to climb Mount Everest? Scuba dive? Run half marathons? It depends on the person.?There's no one-size-fits-all answer. You have to consider countless different factors like body types, genetics and blood pressure.?

BI: Besides results, why is P90X so popular?

TH: I think the reason anything is popular is the delivery system. One of the reasons P90X works is because I make the process of working out entertaining. Some people find me funny, others find me obnoxious ? but hopefully more people find me funny than obnoxious.?I do my?Arnold Schwarzenegger?and pterodactyl?impressions and I have funny tips for the day.?

Some trainers treat fitness like rocket science. Others take on a drill sergeant mentality. I make hard-core entertaining and silly. That's a nuance that puts it over the top.

California law will aid injured student athletes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? California will become the first state to mandate financial protections for student athletes who suffer career-ending injuries in some of the state's top college sports programs under a bill Gov. Jerry Brown announced signing Thursday.

SB1525 protects athletes at the four universities that receive more than $10 million annually in sports media revenue ? the University of Southern California, UCLA, Berkeley and Stanford.

They will have to give academic scholarships to students who lose their athletic scholarships if they are injured while playing their sport. They also will have to cover insurance deductibles and pay health care premiums for low-income athletes, among other provisions.

The legislation requires the universities to pay future medical costs for on-the-field injuries, providing student-athletes with the kind of guarantees that even some professional athletes don't receive.

"Neither personal injury nor poverty should dim the dreams of a student-athlete pursuing a college degree, particularly when their performance has enriched their college," Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, said in a statement.

Of the four schools, only Stanford objected to the final version of the bill, saying it is unfair to include only the top money-generating universities. Padilla said his bill eventually could affect San Diego State University, as well, because it recently switched to a different conference with more lucrative television rights.

His legislation was one of several higher education bills the governor announced signing.

Another, AB970, would require the University of California and California State University systems to provide public notice and consult with students before raising tuition.

Police: Student shoots self at Okla. junior high

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? A gunshot rang out at an Oklahoma junior high school before classes began Wednesday, terrifying teenagers who feared a gunman was on the loose.

Soon, though, students learned no one else was in danger. One of their eighth-grade classmates had taken his own life, shooting himself in the head with a handgun in the hall, authorities said.

"Throughout the entire thing, we all thought someone shot someone else," said student Paiton Gardner, 14. "We didn't know it was a suicide. We were freaking out."

Some students bolted outside Stillwater Junior High. Staffers quickly locked down the building and evacuated the rest of the school's 700 eighth- and ninth-graders, along with students from an adjacent elementary school, police Capt. Randy Dickerson said.

Dickerson said the 13-year-old didn't leave a note, and authorities said they don't know why he killed himself. Superintendent Ann Caine, who oversees the district about 70 miles west of Tulsa, said there weren't any reports that the teen had been bullied.

"There is no indication that that's what occurred," Caine said. She said the teen was a good student who got along with other kids.

About 120 people attended a vigil Wednesday evening at Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Hana Sumpter, a 14-year-old eight-grader, said she was friends with the boy and was standing nearby when the student shot himself.

"I heard the gunshot. I turned around and he was on the floor," Sumpter said, adding that he had given no indication of problems beforehand.

The Rev. Derrek Belase led the group in prayer. Members of the student's family did not attend the service.

Police wouldn't say where the weapon came from or how the eighth-grader got it into the school. Caine said there aren't any metal detectors but expects there will be discussions about the policy.

Gardner said she realized something was wrong early Wednesday when students began to run past her.

"People looked terrified," said Gardner, a ninth-grader. "The football coach was like, 'Get out, get out! Someone's been shot.'"

She and other students sprinted down the hallway, passing blood on the wall and floor as she ran to a nearby playground.

Another ninth-grader, Jake Green, said he heard the single shot ring out after he and dozens of other students gathered to pray before school.

"We heard this loud boom and everyone just got quiet," Green said. "No one said a word."

A teacher told the students to get out of the building, Green said.

"Everyone was really scared. We didn't know if the kid shot himself or if there was a shooter outside the school who shot in," Green said. "Everyone didn't know what was going on, so they were screaming and running as fast as they could to get to the playground."

Some students wore superhero costumes Wednesday as part of an effort to raise cancer awareness, but Dickerson said the student who shot himself didn't appear to be dressed up.

"If was wearing a costume, it wasn't evident to me," Dickerson said.

Green said students who were already in their classrooms were locked in the building for about an hour. Parents were told to pick up their children at a nearby shopping center.

"It was really scary," Green said. "Everyone's kind of traumatized and doesn't know how to act or respond."

Kenny Monday told The Associated Press that his son, Kennedy, heard the gunshot but did not witness the shooting.

"It's so sad that the kid lost his life, but we're just glad he didn't shoot anyone else," Monday said.

Israeli PM to set 'red line' on Iran at UN | Morocco World News

By Jonah Mande

UNITED NATIONS, September 27, 2012 (AFP)

Israel?s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to the United Nations on Thursday to declare the ?clear red line? that Iran?s nuclear drive must not cross if it is to avoid attack.

Netanyahu was to address the UN General Assembly in New York shortly after Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, but was expected to overshadow his rival at a summit dominated by talk of war in Syria and tension with Iran.

?In his speech, the prime minister will set a clear red line,? a senior Israeli official told reporters traveling with Netanyahu, referring to the trigger that could dramatically escalate the confrontation with Tehran.

Western powers share Israel?s fear that Iran is on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon that could dramatically tip the balance of power in an already volatile Middle East and set off a regional atomic arms race.

But they have resisted calls to define publicly a threshold at which Iran?s uranium enrichment and alleged weapons research would become intolerable, preferring to apply pressure through economic and diplomatic sanctions.

This week, however, US President Barack Obama, in his own General Assembly address, came closer than ever to the Israeli position, declaring that the United States would ?do what we must? to prevent Iran getting the bomb.

Iran?s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was defiant at the summit, accusing the West and Israel of ?nuclear intimidation? and dismissing both economic sanctions and the threats of ?uncultured Zionists? as irrelevant to his nation.

Several world leaders in New York, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, warned against threats of war, but the Israelis seem confident their position is at least in line with Obama?s tough stance.

?Obama said that Iran will not have nuclear weapons. Netanyahu will clarify the way to prevent Iran from having nuclear weapons,? the official said. ?What he will say regarding red lines will help ensure this goal will be achieved.

?Netanyahu is convinced that the US and Israel can work together to achieve this common goal,? he added.

Addressing the General Assembly on Tuesday, Obama made clear that Washington would not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran, which Israel has said would pose an existential threat to the Jewish state.

?Make no mistake. A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy,? Obama said.

Israel, the Middle East?s sole, if undeclared, nuclear power, has expressed public skepticism that the current international approach of tough sanctions is enough to halt Iran?s nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Abbas, a year after making an historic appeal for UN recognition of Palestinian statehood in the absence of peace talks that last collapsed in 2010, is expected to return to the assembly with a more modest goal.

Abbas wants to see Palestine recognized as a non-state member with pre-1967 borders encompassing the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.

?We want Palestine back on the map, on the 1967 lines, with east Jerusalem as its capital, carried by 150 to 170 nations,? Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat told journalists last week.

The Palestinians see this as the basis for border negotiations with Israel on a permanent solution to their conflict, but Israel and the United States oppose any recognition before the terms of a final deal are agreed.

The Palestinian leadership was formerly opposed to non-state membership, seeing this as a distraction and possible dead end, but their political clout has diminished in the year since their initial bid.

Enhanced observer status would at least give them access to more agencies, such as the World Health Organization or International Criminal Court.

If it were to come to a vote, the Palestinians would probably win a majority of UN members, but they have reportedly promised Washington not to push the issue too hard until after the November 6 US presidential election.

The UN General Assembly was also hearing from Myanmar leader Thein Sein, who has presided over historic reforms after decades of military rule, leading to rapidly thawing relations with the West.

Priscilla Stuckey: The TNB Self-Interview - The Nervous Breakdown

Your book is a synthesis of memoir and cultural critique. Why did you choose this form?

Because the material demanded it?isn?t this what writers usually say? Except in my case it was because the stand-alone memoir was going nowhere. The agents I sent it to all said the same thing: ?I like it, but ?? Then they couldn?t tell me what else was needed. So I hired an editor, sent her my chapters, and chewed my nails until we got on the phone. And the first words out of her mouth were, ?The most interesting part of this book hasn?t been written yet.? Not what I wanted to hear when I was almost done with a full draft!

?

What was the ?most interesting part? she was looking for?

It turned out to be connecting the dots between my personal experience and the larger culture. Some synthesizing of all those years I spent in grad school studying history and religion and anthropology.

How did you start writing these new sections?

I just dived in. Started writing what came to mind. The real creative writing in this book, to me, is found in those more reflective sections because once I leaped away from the memoir, no longer tethered to describing my life, I had to listen for what wanted to be written next. I spent a number of years listening and writing, listening and writing. The trick, in terms of art, was to weave together personal and social in a way that was always engaging. In every sentence I was thinking about the reader?s experience.

?

Speaking of experience, you claim to have a few experiences that people might find, um, extraordinary.

You mean woo-woo?

?

Your word, not mine! You say it?s possible to communicate with other species?animals, even trees. Most people would say this can take place only in the imagination. Why do you think you?re not just making this up in your own head?

I?m so glad someone finally asked me this! One theme of the book is that nature is far more creative and intelligent than Western culture has given it credit for. I mean individual creatures as well as the Earth-ecosystem as a whole. Traditional societies tend to recognize the land as alive and aware, yet in Western culture, at least since the scientific revolution, we?ve settled for a much more limited?and depressing?view, that the Earth is a machine that can be managed by human beings, and everyone else except us is there to be manipulated. Ever since Descartes?and until recently?we?ve believed that we?re the only ones with mind or intelligence. That?s a pretty arrogant view, and the price of that arrogance is steep. We pay the price in isolation?believing things take place in our own individual minds instead of on the stage we share with all other creatures. Traditional indigenous societies tend to choose a different view?that mind, or intelligence, is shared throughout the world. That trees, animals, rocks, or the land itself may be able to communicate. I tend to vote with indigenous societies on this one. My experience tells me their view is closer to how things are.

?

But doesn?t this violate what we know about nature through science?

No, not necessarily?at least, not the science that pays close attention to experience. We tend to forget, though, that a lot of science starts with beliefs. It was especially true at the beginning of modern science, during the scientific revolution.

?

Beliefs went into the making of modern science?

Oh, yes. Take that belief of Descartes?s that only humans have mind or soul, and everyone else is as unconscious as a machine. Descartes practiced vivisection?cutting open an animal while alive?because he thought an animal was only a mechanism that could not feel pain, and the screams he heard while he was slicing were nothing more than the screechings of a machine. But where did he get this idea? Not from the scientific method. He brought his mechanistic assumptions into the laboratory and proceeded from there. In other words, he started with a belief. In fact, he had to turn off a whole lot of testable experience?like his sense of hearing or his sight of an animal writhing or his natural feeling of empathy?to cut up a live animal. Being attached to beliefs can cause people to violate a lot of what they know from their senses. And beliefs can and do reside in science as well as religion.

?

Does this mean you don?t see any conflict between science and religion?

I didn?t quite say that. I only want to call attention to a few powerful religious ideas that became part and parcel of science. Like the idea of original sin, which says that people have an inborn tendency to be bad. It was dogma for a thousand years in Europe, all through the Middle Ages, and so it was the natural starting place for all of our modern philosophy too. Hobbes?s famous line, that the state of nature is ?solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short,? is just a secular wording of what the Catholic Church had been teaching for a millennium?that nature is imperfect and that human beings are at heart selfish and greedy and they need an authority over them to force them to be good. This idea passed into economic theory and also eventually fed into Darwin?s belief that competition is the main driver in evolution. Now what happens when people are continually told they are selfish and greedy? And when the rules of society or business, such as the laws that govern corporations, assume that people are selfish and greedy? Well, people?and corporations?will act selfish and greedy! It?s only natural.

?

So you don?t think it?s natural to be competitive?

Oh, yes, but it?s also natural to be cooperative and generous. Unfortunately, the sciences until very recently ignored the cooperative half?because, I would argue, of the fifteen-hundred-year influence of a religious idea.

?

So you?re critical of science. Are you critical of religion too?

I would say respectfully critical of both science and religion. I notice that many branches of Christianity, for instance, are not paying a lot of attention to the environmental crisis, which is the biggest mess we?re facing now.

?

Why do you think that is?

Because a long time ago, Christianity got separated from nature.

During the scientific revolution?

Long before that, actually. It started back in the Roman Empire. Religions of the empire were more about escaping the Earth than loving it. Given the Roman attitudes toward nature, it made sense. Romans were all about dominating the natural world. The best nature, to them, was stomped-down, used-up nature?nature remade to serve human needs.

?

Sounds familiar.

Yes, it does. Where do you think we got so many of our ideas? Those kinds of attitudes didn?t really help people love the Earth. Neither did the drastic economic inequality at the time. In the decades leading up to the fall of Rome, something like 5 percent of people owned 80 percent of the land and made all political decisions. Does that sound familiar too? So most people?s lives were very, very hard. They wanted to escape from this evil world, and they looked to religion to help them. And it worked. The traditional Roman religion taught that people who lived virtuous lives would find a better world in the heavens after they died. Other groups taught people to use meditation and chanting to ascend to the heavens. Leaving the Earth was very popular at the time.

?

I always thought religion and nature got separated during the scientific revolution. After all, science was all about throwing out old superstition, wasn?t it?

Yes, it was. But in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, ?superstition? was code word for ?popery.? The new scientists were terribly bothered by old, Catholic ways of thinking because so many of them were Protestants first and scientists second. All those old medieval ideas about the Earth as a living organism? Popish superstition. So they kicked Earth out of religion for good. They did their best to stamp out all remnants of Earth reverence. From now on, religion would teach about things in the heavens, and science would teach about things on Earth. Neat separation.

That?s an appropriate separation, isn?t it? When it comes to nature, doesn?t the last word belong to science?

Yes, in this sense: that what we know about nature always has to be tested in experience, never just taken on faith or hearsay. But, as we?ve seen, some untested beliefs went into modern science at the start?and modern economics too. The sciences are now changing, thank goodness?cultivating awareness of biotic communities and all the various kinds of communication taking place among creatures we used to regard as nonsentient. I mean, almost every week some new study comes out about how plants see with their tissues or communicate through their hormones or how a bee brain the size of a grass seed calculates travel routes better than a computer. Appreciation for the complexity and innovativeness of other creatures is growing fast in the sciences. But economics will be the last to change, and that?s too bad because our economic rules are the basis for all the destruction we are now doing to the Earth. We need a new economics based in a different model?not the model of Earth as machine but the more scientifically defensible model of Earth as a biosphere, a community. A biosphere has limits. A biosphere is a community based on give-and-take. We?ve done a lot of taking from the Earth because we thought it was a machine. We need to rewrite economics to base it on the model of a community.

?

In closing, I have to ask about Sapphire, your dog with one blue eye and one brown eye. You talk a lot about her in the book. Would she think you portray her fairly?

I think she would say she?s not given NEARLY enough credit. Like I was a very challenging student, and she did her best.

UNC docs: Williams' tumor not cancer

Doctors at UNC Hospitals said Tuesday that the tumor they removed last week from head men's basketball?coach Roy Williams is not cancerous.

Williams spent less than two days in the hospital to have the tumor removed from his right kidney.?It remains unclear how much time the 62-year-old coach will miss leading up to the start of preseason practice Oct. 13.

?We are pleased with how well Coach Williams is doing," said Dr. Eric Wallen, professor of urology at UNC, who led the surgical team.?"If everything continues to progress as expected, he should be back to his normal activities soon.??

The school said doctors discovered the tumor during a physical earlier this month, and the coach underwent a 3?-hour procedure to remove it.?

?Number one, I want to express how overwhelmed I have been by the outpouring of support, concern and good wishes by everyone, especially members of the Carolina Basketball family,? Williams said in a statement released by the school. ?I?ve just been blown away by the calls, cards, prayers and well-wishes from people all around the world in and out of the basketball community. My family and I are thankful to all that have expressed your concerns."

Williams might need another operation to remove another tumor from his left kidney.

He has led his alma mater to NCAA championships in 2005 and 2009.

Europcar's lost property reveals the secret life of its hire cars | News ...

Europcar the leader in car hire services in Europe for business and leisure users, hires out thousands of vehicles every day. But the variety of weird and wonderful items left by customers never fails to puzzle Europcar staff.

Unsurprisingly, sunglasses, CDs and loose change are the most common items left in Europcar vehicles. However, some customers carry more intriguing cargo when they travel, as Europcar?s lost property department has recently reported.

Unusual Items Left in Europcar?s Rental Cars in 2012

? A live mouse in a cage
? Two 6?10 ft oil paintings
? Ashes in an urn
? 30 plants
? A hedge trimmer

It was Europcar?s Belfast City Airport branch that found an urn of ashes when a vehicle was returned.? The ashes of a customer?s mother had been brought over from South Africa and the customer was relieved to have them back so that she could scatter them at her mother?s birth place.

And all the glasses that go unclaimed are recycled as part of Europcar?s ?Go Green? pledge.

But probably the best item left behind was discovered by staff at Europcar?s Blackpool Station location.? It was a life-size dummy, dressed as an old lady and left in the boot of a Ford Focus. The Europcar driver had the fright of his life when he thought he?d found a body!

?Judging from our lost property, our vehicles have a tale to tell? said Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar UK Group.? ?But our staff always go out of their way to reunite our customers with their forgotten items, no matter how bizarre.?

United tops Union, moves into 4th in East

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:31 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Lionard Pajoy scored in the 67th minute to lead D.C. United to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Thursday night.

D.C. (14-10-5) moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Houston and two ahead of Columbus.

Philadelphia (7-14-6) remained ninth in the East, one point behind New England. The Union's stretched their winless streak to eight matches, falling to 0-4-4 since beating the Revolution 2-1 on July 29 - and have scored just four goals in that span.

United scored after Chris Pontius approached the box and drew Union goalie Zac MacMath out of the goal. Pontius passed it to Pajoy, who stopped the ball and sent it into the wide-open net for his seventh goal of the season - and second since being traded from Philadelphia to D.C. on Aug. 16.

Best practices for mobile e-commerce | Webdesigner Depot

ThumbThe web design field has gone through immense advancements and in some cases overhauls over the last decade. These advancements have undoubtedly introduced new technologies and innovations in order to make online consumer experience more pleasurable. However, they have also brought about new challenges as well, especially when it comes to mobile sites.

Ever since e-commerce websites went mobile, the playing field changed beyond recognition. New rules were made. Older ones were rewritten. And in some cases, traditional design approaches were abandoned altogether in favor of new versatile web design practices. These practices had one thing in common, to make mobile sites more responsive.

Today we?ll look at best practices for mobile e-commerce sites that new start-ups and even SMBs involved in e-commerce should pay attention to. These field-tested strategies essential for any designer working in this field.

1. Make the search box easy to find

Being a smartphone user myself, one of the first things I observed while browsing online was my constant dependency on the search box. This is something that designers should keep in mind when designing mobile e-commerce websites. There is a big difference between surfing on a PC and on a smartphone or tablet. Since there is very little room for navigation, the search box essentially becomes the epicenter of internet browsing. It needs to be placed in a clearly visible place (generally top center) and it should be highlighted and given prominence. In fact, in an effort to make the user experience more pleasurable, the search box should be on every page so viewers don?t have to head back to the main page to start a new search.

Amazon

Amazon.com is a good example to illustrate this point. One of the most well known commercial entities in existence today, Amazon.com is also one of the world?s most visited websites. If you look at the website?s mobile version, you will find that it is virtually impossible to browse products unless it gets featured on the main page as the hot seller. To compensate for that, Amazon has placed a search box at the very top of every page to assist customers in navigation.

?

2. Add social media to your site

We all know that this is the era of social media; hundreds of millions of people are sharing content, ideas and experiences with the world every day. With that being said, social media should be an integral component of any mobile e-commerce site regardless of industry. Survey after survey has shown that if people have a pleasurable online experience, they will share it through their mobile devices. This includes product reviews, recommendations or comments in general about a service or overall experience. This is highly valuable feedback that companies should seek out and display on their site wherever possible. It also factors into Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as search engines consider user experience and product ratings when displaying results in the search listings.

Social media

Facebook and Twitter are a given. Google Plus has recently come into the spotlight courtesy of Google?s influence and then let?s not forget Pinterest, currently the fastest growing social media platform in the world. These are all platforms to establish and solidify company web presence.

?

3. Establish a flexible foundation

We?re not just talking about flexible screen resolutions, although it?s true that there are simply way too many devices nowadays that can access the internet. Just a decade ago it was primarily PCs, Macs and laptops. Now you have to add smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, and net-books into the mix; all capable to displaying multiple resolutions with rotating horizontal/vertical text. Designers simply cannot factor in all the devices and go about creating multiple versions of the same website.

Use fluid grids and flexible layouts

Instead of focusing on the device, the smart way forward is to focus on the web browser and make use of its capabilities. Creating a fluid grid and flexible layout is an amazing way to creating a responsive website design. In a nutshell, it is the ability of the website to change its appearance based on the screen resolution of the device that is accessing it. Fluid grids can resize and reposition content as the screen width changes. There are many tools that can assists designers in creating a these grids. Golden Grid System and Simple Grid are a few examples. Tiny Fluid Grid is another good one.

The same applies to images. As the columns resize, images should resize along with them to accommodate the relevant content and improve readability. Images can be dynamically cropped to only show the most important elements or be resized completely for the most desirable results.

Timberland

This is a revolutionary approach that is being eagerly adopted by millions of e-commerce businesses worldwide. However this is not an easy task to pull off. Complex websites that use a three to four column approach in their design architecture will require more work to fully transition the website.

Mobile driven customer service

There is no denying the importance of quality customer service whether it?s in person or over the phone. Over the years, online customer service has also been gaining steady prominence and many companies smartly implemented this strategy into their business infrastructure. Zappos was one of the first companies to truly exploit the benefits of this approach, delivering top-notch customer service via Twitter. Many companies followed suit.

Zappos

Today more and more customers want to connect via the internet and engage in real time conversations. This has resulted in the demand for mobile driven customer service because of its instantaneous interaction and amazing results. For an e-commerce website to be successful it needs both strong products and strong interaction and if leveraged correctly, mobile driven customer service can be the brand differentiator between a failed product and a house hold commodity. Just look at where Zappos is today because of it!

Always be ready for change

It is the way of the tech world. What?s in demand today can be completely obsolete tomorrow. Designers and e-commerce companies need to be in an ever-ready state of alert regarding shifting market trends especially those pertaining to mobile devices. On average, a consumer changes his or her mobile every two years. This means that mobile platforms in different geographical locations will be rapidly be changing every couple of years. Retailers need to be aware of this and closely monitor the situation to seek out not just new opportunities but also threats to the current system.

The mobile internet has now become a phenomenon and there will always be more that e-commerce websites can and should be doing in order to better market themselves. However, the above mentioned practices standout because of their immense potential and long proven track record to deliver immediate positive results.

?

Mobile commerce and ROI

Mobile commerce does not often get the attention it deserves from consumers, mainly because companies still focus on traditional mediums to display their website. However recent surveys have shown that the number of mobile internet users is growing at an astounding rate and it won?t be long before they are neck and neck with PC?s and laptops. Furthermore, in-depth cases studies done on multiple companies have safely concluded that mobile commerce plays a key positive role in a company?s return on investment (ROI).

Return on investment

To illustrate this point, consider the following:

  • eBay?s iPhone application alone generated $400 million dollars in sales in 2010
  • Intuit sales grew 30% immediately after the company introduced mobile tax products in 2010
  • One out of every 10 Smartphone users listens to Pandora on a daily basis, contributing to the company?s massive growth and authority in the music marketplace

It?s a no brainer that mobile commerce can significantly impact a company?s revenue, its brand and its overall authority in today?s competitive market as the trend setter for others to follow. It does require a fair bit of investment; but the return on that investment is substantial and combined with rock solid competent e-commerce practices like the ones mentioned here, it is the perfect recipe for success for any e-commerce website.

?

Do you shop from your mobile device? Have you developed a mobile e-commerce site, what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them? Let us know in the comments.

Georgia protest wave ebbs but may hurt Saakashvili in vote

TBILISI (Reuters) - Hundreds of people rallied in Georgia on Friday in a fourth day of protests over brutality in state prisons, a bout of unrest that could damage prospects for President Mikheil Saakashvili's party to come out on top in elections on October 1.

The protests, which broke out after two television channels that back Saakashvili's opponents showed footage of prison abuses, have saddled him with an unexpectedly tough election battle against a coalition led by a billionaire businessman.

About 500 people gathered in the capital Tbilisi on Friday, markedly fewer than before the resignation of the prisons and interior ministers in mid-week. But analysts said public anger over violence in jails threatens the ruling National Movement party's chances of winning the coming parliamentary vote.

The opposition Georgian Dream coalition led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili was 20 percentage points behind Saakashvili's party before the protests.

"The ruling party will (now) get fewer votes than had been expected, of course, but it's difficult to predict how big the decline will be," said Gia Nodia, an independent analyst.

"It's not clear whether Georgian Dream will get these votes or another opposition party."

He said the exit of the ministers and Saakashvili's moves - he quickly denounced the abuses - had largely been effective.

But Shorena Shaverdashvili, editor-in-chief of the independent Liberal magazine, said Saakashvili's party could now lose an election it had seemed certain to win in the former Soviet republic.

"If elections are free and fair, the ruling party has no chance of winning, but a lot will depend on the voter turnout," Shaverdashvili said. "The system has been shaken. Even Saakashvili himself admitted that it was a systemic failure."

Hours after the release of the prison video, Saakashvili promised to punish those responsible and seek radical reforms of the jail system, asking policemen to take over prison guard duties while reforms were being worked out.

Saakashvili's government says the video, which shows guards beating, punching and humiliating prisoners, as well as inmates being raped with objects, was staged and recorded by guards who were bribed by "politically motivated persons".

The head of the Tbilisi prison, his two deputies and several prison guards were arrested, while international organizations and human rights groups called for a prompt investigation.

Ivanishvili, his fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at $6.4 billion, owns one of the broadcasters that showed the film.

A once-reclusive tycoon whose wealth equals nearly half Georgia's economic output, Ivanishvili launched his political movement last year and has campaigned on calls for Saakashvili to resign.

Saakashvili became the West's political darling when he rose to power after the bloodless "Rose Revolution" that toppled Eduard Shevardnadze, a former Soviet foreign minister, in 2003.

But opponents have accused Saakashvili of curbing political freedoms and criticized him for leading Georgia - a country of 4.7 million people on a transit route for oil and gas supplies across the volatile Caucasus region - into a brief but disastrous war with Russia in August 2008.

Author Elmore Leonard wins prestigious book award

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) ? For a man who built his career on word economy, the title is pretty darned long ? The National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

Still, Elmore Leonard says he's thrilled to receive one of the literary world's highest honors.

The 86-year-old crime novelist will be presented with the medal in New York on Nov. 14, the same evening this year's National Book Awards are announced.

"I was very surprised. I didn't ever count on winning this kind of an award," Leonard, with one of his trademark Virginia Slims between his fingers, said in an interview at his home in suburban Detroit. "I've won a lot of awards, but not like this one."

He'll be introduced by British novelist Martin Amis and deliver remarks that organizers have requested he limit to six minutes.

Asked if he'd abide by that request, Leonard took a drag from his cigarette and said: "Oh yeah."

In taking home the National Book Foundation's lifetime achievement award, Leonard joins a list of past recipients that includes Ray Bradbury, Norman Mailer, Arthur Miller, Toni Morrison, Philip Roth, John Updike, Gore Vidal and Tom Wolfe.

"These names, these are all finished writers," Leonard said. "They know what they're doing."

And so does Leonard, says Amis, who remembers first reading him and being impressed by his "faultless ear." He loves "Get Shorty" and "Be Cool" among others and says Leonard's books have "incredible dialogue" and "incredible structure."

"You read page after page and there's no sense of false quantities, in the sense of repetition," Amis said, noting that Leonard transcends being labeled a crime writer, citing an old axiom: Literary writers covet sales and successful writers covet respect.

This award, Amis says, will help ensure Leonard has both.

Or as Leonard puts it, in his succinct style: "I think I'm a good writer. I don't see any objection to my being on this list."

The National Book Foundation isn't the only organization honoring Leonard. The Library of America, which releases hardcover volumes of the country's greatest authors, from Herman Melville to Saul Bellow, has added Leonard to the pantheon. Four of his novels will be published in a bound edition in 2014, and additional volumes are planned.

Leonard, one of the few writers the library has honored while still living, has been recognized many times over by the general public.

Nearly half of Leonard's 45 novels have appeared on The New York Times' best-seller list, and he's hoping to add to that total with his 46th effort ? working title: "Blue Dreams" ? a tale that involves both a rogue Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent and bull riding. He's written several dozen pages so far.

Despite his advancing age and some recent personal upheaval ? he's divorcing his wife of nearly 20 years ? Leonard is pressing ahead and expects to have "Blue Dreams" finished "certainly by the end of the year."

Sitting in his home office at a desk covered with papers, photographs and research materials, Leonard thumbed through the neatly stacked pages of "Blue Dreams," yanked one out of the pile and began reading.

What came out of his mouth was unmistakable, vintage Leonard ? a crisply written narrative with lines of deadpan dialogue uttered by morally ambiguous characters.

That verbal back-and-forth spoken by fictional people who sound real is what has made Leonard's writing so distinctive.

"People always say, 'Where do you get (your characters') words?', and I say, 'Can't you remember people talking or think up people talking in your head?' That's all it is. I don't know why that seems such a wonder to people," he said.

It's also why his characters have spent so much time on both big and small screens over the years.

Leonard's novels and short stories have been turned into 20 feature films, nine TV movies and three series, including the current FX show "Justified," which stars Timothy Olyphant as one of Leonard's signature characters, the cool-under-pressure U.S. marshal Raylan Givens.

His all-time favorite adaptation is the 1997 Quentin Tarantino film, "Jackie Brown," which was based on the Leonard novel "Rum Punch."

When Tarantino called to ask for guidance ahead of filming, Leonard remembered saying, "Do what you want. I like your work."

Tarantino is one of many Hollywood heavyweights who bow down at the altar of Leonard.

George Clooney hung out at Leonard's place while filming the big-screen adaptation of "Out of Sight," and members of Aerosmith ? in town for a concert ? also visited, taking a dip in Leonard's pool.

He'll be 87 in a few weeks. And while the slender, bespectacled man friends call "Dutch" is far removed from his days of riding along with Detroit homicide cops, he still writes every day in eight-hour shifts that are befitting his hometown's automotive legacy.

Leonard's father was a General Motors executive, and the future author penned advertising copy for Chevrolet as a younger man.

And Leonard follows the same writing protocols that have served him for decades.

He writes longhand on the 63-page unlined yellow pads that are custom-made for him, and when a page is completed, he transfers the words onto a separate piece of paper using a typewriter.

Leonard tries to complete a handful of pages by the time his workday ends at 6 p.m.

He may be on the cusp of becoming a lifetime achievement award winner, but Leonard has no intention of ending his life's work anytime soon.

"I probably won't quit until I just quit everything ? quit my life ? because it's all I know how to do," he said. "And it's fun. I do have fun writing, and a long time ago, I told myself, 'You gotta have fun at this, or it'll drive you nuts.'"
