Portland Roofing - Proper Roof Care Basics

A roof is the least utilized but most vulnerable part of a house. Unlike the rest of the house, one tends to neglect the roof since it not something you notice in your day to day living. It is when problems like leakage begin, that one begins to wonder about the health of their roof. Proper roof care to prevent major damages is a pretty simple and easy to do job. It is important that roof inspections are done periodically and religiously. Make a schedule for when it should be done so you know you are being responsible and practicing proper roof care.

When inspecting a roof the things to look for are 1. Broken or loose shingles 2. Jammed drain pipes 3. Accumulation of algae and other waste material on the roof 4. Mold growth 5. Checking for trees that are too close to the roof

Roof inspections should be done before the rainy season starts off. This is so as to avoid any damage from being aggravated during the rains. The main thing about maintaining a roof is cleanup. Keeping the roof clean and making sure all signs of mould on the shingles are immediately cleaned up will ensure that the problem does not go unnoticed.

If the roof is slate, then most often people tend to patch any damage up with tar. That is the wrong thing to do as all it does is conceal the damage; instead it is best to replace the damaged shingles. The way to figure out which shingles need replacement you need to tap all of them and listen. The ones that are good will return a sharp sound while the ones that need replacement will sound heavy.

If you are in a place that is notorious for severe winters, then it is important to guard against ice formation on your roof. Before winter sets in you should clean the roof of any debris that has collected on the shingles. If debris is not removed, it can allow ice formations, and ice can crack the tiles. So make sure you clean the roof before the start of winter and that there is no debris on the rooftop.

Below the shingles is the flashing. When a leak starts to appear make sure you check the flashing under the shingles as well. It could just be that the flashing is worn out or damaged. The sheathing under the shingles also needs to be checked for damage if you are dealing with leaks.

A roof is built to last anywhere between 75 and 100 years. Proper roof care will ensure it outlasts you. Just a little goes a long way, so make sure you create a roof inspection schedule and follow it.

Rate of severe reactions higher than thought in young children with food allergies

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Young children with allergies to milk and egg experience reactions to these and other foods more often than researchers had expected, a study reports. The study also found that severe and potentially life-threatening reactions in a significant number of these children occur and that some caregivers are hesitant to give such children epinephrine, a medication that reverses the symptoms of such reactions and can save lives.

"This study reinforces the importance of doctors, parents and other caregivers working together to be even more vigilant in managing food allergy in children," said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The study results appear online in the June 25 issue of Pediatrics and are the latest findings from the Consortium of Food Allergy Research (CoFAR), a network established by NIAID to conduct clinical trials, observational studies and basic research to better understand and treat food allergy.

The research is part of an ongoing CoFAR observational study that enrolled 512 infants aged 3 to 15 months who at study entry were allergic to milk or egg, or who were likely to be allergic, based on a positive skin test and the presence of moderate-to-severe eczema, a chronic skin condition. The investigators are carefully following these children to see whether their allergies resolve or if new allergies, particularly peanut allergy, develop. The study is ongoing at research hospitals in Baltimore; Denver; Durham, N.C.; Little Rock, Ark.; and New York City.

CoFAR investigators advised parents and caregivers to avoid giving their children foods that could cause an allergic reaction. Study participants also received an emergency action plan, describing the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction to food and what to do if a child has one, along with a prescription and instructions on how to give epinephrine if a severe reaction occurred.

Data compiled from patient questionnaires and clinic visits over three years showed that 72 percent of the children had a food-allergic reaction, and that 53 percent of the children had more than one reaction, with the majority of reactions being to milk, egg or peanut. This translated into a rate of nearly 1 food-allergic reaction per child per year. Approximately 11 percent of the reactions were classified as severe and included symptoms such as swelling in the throat, difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, dizziness or fainting. Almost all of the severe reactions were caused by ingestion of the allergen rather than inhalation or skin contact.

In only 30 percent of the severe reactions did caregivers administer epinephrine, a drug that alleviates the symptoms of severe reactions by increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels and opening the airways. Investigators found that caregivers did not give children epinephrine for a number of reasons: the drug was not available, they were too afraid to administer it, they did not recognize the symptoms as those of an allergic reaction, or they did not recognize the reaction as severe.

"This study documenting the natural history of allergic reactions to three of the major food allergens in pre-school children provides important new information for parents, caregivers and health care workers because of the large number of children involved and the rigorous follow-up," said Daniel Rotrosen, M.D., director of the NIAID Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation, which oversees CoFAR. "The findings not only reveal that food-allergic reactions occur at a much higher rate in young children than we thought, they also suggest that more vigilance and increased use of epinephrine is needed."

Almost 90 percent of allergic reactions to egg, milk or peanut occurred after a child accidentally ate the food. The reasons for the accidental exposures included caregivers misreading food labels, not checking a food for an allergen, and unintentionally allowing a food allergen to come into contact with other foods (cross-contamination).

The study also found that approximately 11 percent of allergic reactions to egg, milk or peanut occurred after a caregiver -- most often a parent -- provided a child the allergenic food intentionally.

"Intentional exposures to allergenic food are typically reported in teenagers, who tend to take more risks or who might be embarrassed about their food allergy," says David Fleischer, M.D., the lead study author. "What is troubling is that in this study we found that a significant number of young children received allergenic foods from parents who were aware of the allergy."

CoFAR investigators are exploring possible reasons for these intentional exposures, but they speculate that it could reflect parents' at-home tests to determine if children have outgrown the food allergy. Because giving children allergenic foods could possibly result in life-threatening reactions, such testing should only be conducted under the direct supervision of a health care professional trained in performing food challenges. The study findings reinforce the importance of caregivers working closely with their doctors to understand how to effectively manage a child's food allergy.

91% Safety Not Guaranteed

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (74) | Rotten (7)

"Safety" can't sustain its own offbeat energy. By the end, even Aubrey Plaza would roll her eyes at it.

Neatly, the script embarks on one journey while dangling the possibility of another: the prospect of taking a sudden leap from comic reality into the realm of pure imagination.

"Safety Not Guaranteed" is most vibrant and vital at its edges, in the way that the characters interact with each other while waiting for something to happen.

It's brisk and assured and never begs the audience's indulgence. No time is wasted. The movie is, at every moment, either funny or pushing the story forward, or both.

The film is modest but skillful and heartfelt, spiced just so by Plaza and company.

Safety Not Guaranteed casts an enchanting spell from its opening scene.

The superbly-balanced tone of this sweet and sour outsider-romance is the real star of [Trevorrow's] feature debut, though breakout turns by on-the-cusp players Audrey Plaza and Jake M Johnson add to the film's warm and wondrous sense of discovery.

It is an offbeat charmer that is fun and engaging from a storytelling standpoint, but one that also brings a surprisingly rich emotional payoff.

Unlike time travel or jet-setting, "Safety Not Guaranteed" shows that making movies can still be more about the journey than the destination. Whether or not you have first-class tickets.

"Safety Not Guaranteed" is eccentric enough to get mistaken for an uplifting fantasy, but it's Plaza who belongs in the penthouse.

Hope is a powerful thing and Safety Not Guaranteed delivers in its tale of longing, deliverance and connection during the here and now.

An intriguing yet erratic effort...

Less of a philosophical argument and more of a character piece driven deep into the heart by Duplass and Plaza.

Have you ever wondered what mumblecore sci-fi would look like? Wonder no more.

Rather than trying to beat Hollywood at its own game of high-tech gadgets and weaponry, director Colin Trevorrow and writer Derek Connolly achieve a sly mix of the insane and the mundane.

A character-driven piece about regret and true partnership - our basic, primal need for someone to take the journey with us even if safety is not guaranteed.

Aubrey Plaza is the best thing about this iffy mock-sci-fi doohickey.

As a hipster rom-com about people trying to shake off their pasts to make present-day connections, it's pretty satisfying.

A strange, light-hearted bit of quasi-sci-fi, with no small amount of heart.

The material is played mostly for laughs and succeeds in that regard. The undercurrent of lament in Safety Not Guaranteed, though, is what holds the film together.

Sony SmartWatch To Launch in India With ?6,299 Price Tag

Sony Inc. has finally decided to launch its SmartWatch across retail stores in India at an approximate INR 6,299.

On Sunday, the Japanese electronic titan confirmed on its Facebook page that the sleek strap-on will be made available in the subcontinent by the end of June this year. First unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in January, the SmartWatch triggered a rage among tech geeks seeking a simple yet highly functional timepiece with some aspects of a smartphone.

The SmartWatch, which comes equipped with a 1.3-inch OLED colour screen backed by Android software, needs to be paired with an Android phone via Bluetooth to display the time.

Besides operating as a timepiece, the device is also capable of performing simple controls, such as displaying phone notifications, controlling music playback applications, getting live Twitter and Facebook updates plus access to other applications like email and calendar reminders.

The wearable device also comes in various interchangeable colour bands and can be pinned onto clothes via a spring-loaded clip on the back. Also available with the SmartWatch is a metal adapter that once can use to affix the device to other standard watchbands.

Sony had previously ventured into manufacturing similar accessories for phones. Take for example the MBW-100 Bluetooth watch launched in 2006, which had the appeal of a smartphone that included caller ID, and SMS functions. However, the device was eventually found to be too bulky and at that time too expensive at around $400 (around INR 22,000).

Prior to the announcement of the SmartWatch launch in India, Sony had released an update that caused several problems for SmartWatch users across the world. Despite a few improvements in the overall performance such as better time displaying and tweaks to other applications, the device seemed to randomly disconnect from paired devices. It's believed that the company is yet to address the issue.

Meanwhile, here's a video preview of Sony' SmartWatch that's will be launched soon in India.

'SWAT-ting' attacks on bloggers prompt call for investigation

A number of conservative bloggers allege they have been targeted through the use of harassment tactics such as SWAT-ting (fooling 911 operators into sending emergency teams to their homes), in retaliation for posts they have written, and now Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., has stepped into the matter. He has sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to investigate the SWAT-ting cases to see if federal laws have been violated.

"I am writing with concern regarding recent reports that several members of the community of online political commentators have been targeted with harassing and frightening actions. Any potentially criminal action that incites fear, seeks to silence a dissenting opinion, and collaterally wastes the resources of law enforcement should be given close scrutiny at all levels," Chambliss wrote in the letter.

"Regardless of any potential political differences that may exist, threats and intimidation have no place in our national political discourse. Those who choose to enter into that political discourse should not have to worry about potential threats to their or their family's safety," Chambliss continued.? "While I am certain that local law enforcement is reviewing each of these instances, I am asking you to please look into each of these cases as well to determine if any federal laws may have been violated. Future targets of SWAT-ting, whether engaged in political speech or not, may not be so fortunate as to escape physical harm."

ABC News spoke with two prominent conservative bloggers who were victims of SWAT-ting, a hoax tactic used by some hackers to infiltrate a victim's phone system, often through voice over IP (VOIP) technology to make calls appear as if they are coming from a residence. The perpetrators call police to report a violent crime at that home to which the police respond, sometimes with SWAT teams.

Just after midnight on July 1, 2011, Patrick Frey, a deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles and a conservative blogger who writes under the name "Patterico," heard a pounding at his door as sheriff's deputies arrived to investigate a call from Frey's home about a man who claimed he had killed his wife. But no one in Frey's home had been killed, and no one had made a phone call to the police.

"It's a phone call that could have gotten me killed," Frey wrote on his blog about the incident.

Frey was cuffed by police while they woke up his wife, who was asleep in their room, and questioned her about the safety of the children.? Helicopters swarmed overhead with searchlights as the sheriff's deputies investigated.

Frey told ABC News he received email threats prior to the SWAT-ting incident.

Late last month, Erick Erickson, the editor of the conservative site RedState.com, was the victim of the same type of targeting. He had written about Frey's case just a few days before.

Erickson sat at home in Macon, Georgia with his family while his children played outside over Memorial Day weekend when two sheriff's deputies drove to the house after receiving a phone call about Erickson allegedly shooting his wife.

"My first thought was, 'What have the kids done?'" Erickson said after seeing the police car outside his home.? "The police officer approached me in the driveway and said it was a call about an accidental shooting.? According to the 911 call, the person claimed I had killed my wife."

Erickson, who said he has received other types of threats in the past, had alerted the sheriff's department after Frey's experience in case he became the victim of a similar occurrence.

The Bibb County District Attorney's office in Georgia currently is investigating the case and could not offer comment on it.? Asked who he suspected was responsible for the phone call to police, Erickson declined to speculate.

But several conservative bloggers have been vocal about who they believe is responsible for the SWAT-tings and other forms of harassment - Brett Kimberlin, a man who was convicted of a series of bombings in Speedway, Indiana in the 1980s and made headlines in 1988 when he claimed to have once sold marijuana to then-vice presidential candidate Dan Quayle.

The group of conservative bloggers organized "Everybody Blog About Brett Kimberlin Day" on May 25, during which they urged the blogging community to write about the actions of Kimberlin.

Kimberlin, who is now the director of a non-profit organization called Justice Through Music, told ABC News that he did not commit or ask anyone to conduct the SWAT-ting hoaxes that were perpetrated against Erickson and Frey.

"Of course not, it's ridiculous.? It's totally irresponsible for them to even say this," Kimberlin told ABC News.?? "There is no truth to anything about the SWAT-ting."

But some conservative bloggers contend Kimberlin and his associates are responsible for other forms of harassment as well. ?Robert Stacy McCain, a contributor to the American Spectator and founder of The Other McCain Blog, wrote about Kimberlin, and shortly after, his wife's place of employment received a phone call from Kimberlin accusing McCain of harassment. ?Based on Kimberlin's ability to find his wife's employer, McCain became concerned Kimberlin also knew the location of his home, so the McCain family relocated to an undisclosed location.

"If I was going to continue doing this story, I?couldn't?do it from my home," McCain told ABC News.?"This kind of intimidation - it's a threat to protected first amendment expression."

"It's being treated as these are just bloggers playing around on Twitter, but this is serious business.? It's much more serious I think than most people now realize," McCain said.

Ali Akbar, the president of the National Blogger's Club, an organization established to support bloggers, recently was targeted by an anonymous website which posted the address of his mother's home in Forth Worth, Texas, along with a picture of the house. Akbar and other bloggers believe the website, "Breitbart Unmasked," is linked to Kimberlin.

The National Blogger's Club recently started a relief fund to help ease the financial woes of bloggers who are undergoing lawsuits, including one lawsuit by Kimberlin against blogger Aaron Walker, and Akbar believes the anonymous post of his mother's home address was a response to the creation of this fund.

"They decided to take this from a discussion about me trying to help some members of my club, and they tried to disable us," Akbar said.

Akbar and his mother are cooperating with the Tarrant County District Attorney's office regarding the incident.

Kimberlin denied he was responsible for the post, even saying that he does not maintain any online presence and said he and his family have been victims of threats themselves and accused the bloggers of constructing a "false narrative" about him.

"I don't blog, I don't comment, I don't tweet on any blogs at all.? This is a right-wing attack on me and my organizations and it's a smear job. It's a swift boat action against us," Kimberlin said. "What they're doing is an obstruction of justice and it's defamatory.? We're cooperating with the authorities in this matter.? They have engaged in a massive smear campaign against us that has resulted in death threats to me and my family and to others associated with us."

The FBI has investigated a number of SWAT-ting incidents in the past.? In 2009, Carlton Nalley was sentenced to nine years in federal prison after pleading guilty to offenses related to a SWAT-ting conspiracy in Fort Worth, Texas.

(AP) ? Browns coach Pat Shurmur says linebacker Scott Fujita has not been distracted by the Saints' bounty scandal.

Fujita was suspended for three games by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his role in the pay-for-hits program while he was with New Orleans. Fujita has maintained his innocence and is appealing the suspension.

Shurmur says his interaction with Fujita has been positive and the 32-year-old team captain "has been about his business" as the Browns opened their mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday. Shurmur said the team has not decided who would fill in for Fujita at strong-side linebacker if he does not win his appeal.

Fujita's reputation has taken a pounding since the bounty scandal broke. He's on the executive committee for the NFLPA and has argued for safety on behalf of the players.

Palestinian Authority cracks down in West Bank town

JENIN, West Bank (Reuters) - In the narrow streets of the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin and the scruffy villages beyond, masked special forces bundle suspects into civilian cars with grim regularity, whisking them away to faraway Jericho prison.

The near-nightly crackle of gunfire, sometimes from drive-by shootings against police stations, has accompanied a crime wave in the northern city of Jenin, once a hub of militants and suicide attackers who struck into nearby Israel.

The Palestinian Authority (PA), in partial control of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, has responded aggressively, if belatedly and, critics say, with scant regard for due process.

The crackdown, led by elite presidential guards and the counter-terrorism unit, is seen as a determined bid by the Western-backed PA to regain control of the impoverished area and smash local networks that challenge its power.

Its forces are swooping not only on local strongmen and rival gangsters who smuggle drugs and rob, but also on rogue security officers suspected of arming and directing them.

The PA, with the Fatah party at its core, has advanced its monopoly on force in the West Bank after years of purges and scraps with rival factions - a process it is now looking to complete among its own ranks and erstwhile allies.

Despite lacking a formal state or a mandate from the ballot box, the PA considers the security sweep in Jenin as a template for cementing its authority throughout the West Bank.

"This is an ongoing security effort and not a campaign with a start and finish. It will encompass every district so that citizens can live in safety and security," Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad told Reuters.

"What's going on now is patching the gaps (in the security establishment) through a focused security effort," he said. "We're not talking about a limited operation here."

After months of unrest, the PA finally swung into action in May when the governor of Jenin died of an apparent heart attack after a midnight fire-fight outside his house, which many locals attributed to rivalries within the restive security forces.

For most of its 45 years under Israeli occupation, Jenin has been dominated by an anarchic patchwork of grassroots political groups and armed factions with shadowy local bosses.

PALESTINIAN "GUANTANAMO"

The depth of the city's crime problem was exposed last year by the murder of Israeli-Palestinian actor Juliano Mer-Khamis, who had set up a youth theatre in Jenin. Armed gangs of smugglers and profiteers began to feud more and more openly.

Officials acknowledge the involvement of some corrupt senior officers in the criminal networks, saying the Jenin governor's death shocked the government into purging those elements and tackling the security challenge more systematically.

The government had some awareness of what the tainted security officials were up to, but their party affiliations shielded them from disciplinary action, the officials say.

"During recent times in Jenin there was some laxity, and in military work, laxity can lead to chaos," said a security official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"This is the challenge to the Palestinian Authority: whether it is to enforce its power and decisions, or let things fall out of its hands."

But families of some detainees criticize the PA for holding their kin without charge or trial and cracking down on Palestinians instead of combating Israeli occupiers.

One prominent figure caught up in the sweep is Zakaria Zubeidi, known for his role in a 2000-2005 Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, against occupation. He led the Fatah-linked al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant group dormant in the West Bank since the party disavowed armed conflict with Israel.

Once a political power broker in Jenin and an ally of the PA, Zubeidi's fall from grace has been dramatic. Arrested two weeks ago, he awaits charges for unspecified crimes in dusty Jericho prison, the PA's central jail in the Jordan Valley.

"Jericho has become like Guantanamo," groaned Zakaria's brother Abed, referring to the U.S. detention centre in Cuba where suspected al Qaeda members sometimes languish for years.

"The idea of being sent there is being used to terrify us," he said, glancing suspiciously out of his car repair shop.

"People come in here all the time with their car windows smashed by (Israeli) settlers. The Authority doesn't defend its people from the attacks, but directs its policy of force at us."

The new governor of Jenin, Talal Dweikat, ensconced in a headquarters bristling with soldiers and shrouded with posters of his late predecessor, argued that the PA's efforts would ultimately advance the cause of independence.

"It will show the world that we as the Palestinian Authority are capable of directing the institutions of the Palestinian state we seek," Dweikat said.
